Dry Erase Calendar

We all love ugly duckling stories, right?

We love burlap and calendars and glossy black frames and projects we can do for free.

I had this ugly duckling that has been hanging around out of sight since high school (um, early 90s...)

I took it apart, cleaned it up, painted it black, exchanged the tacky gold-framed picture cut-outs for burlap and ended up with this swan:

Isn't she pretty?

The white paper is behind the glass, while the writing is on the outside.
That means I can erase the calendar each month and start again!

It's the same idea as this Menu Board that I did a year ago:

Love it!

I'm also loving that my boys went to the garden while they were playing outside this morning. When they came back their wagon was full of this:

Isn't that nice of my 2- and 4-year-old to do?

I'm also loving Beth at Home Stories A to Z. Not only did she mention me in her Tips & Tutes this week, but she also featured me at Tip Junkie Decorate!

Ok, so it wasn't ME she featured, it was this adorable mobile:

Hope you can find an ugly duckling to transform today!

  1. I've gotten so behind! Love the mobile, and really love this latest idea. I like to post menus and the family loves it when I do, but so far it's just been on a piece of printer paper and not very picturesque. This solution is much better!

Also, nice inspiration pic, but I agree it needs some help, as you outlined. Not only would moving the tall elements give more visual focus to the range area, but would also allow you more work room around it, and allow you to line up the range with the island so that you could utilize the island better as prep and baking space.

Be careful that the fridge doesn't get behind the island, so that the island is between the sink and fridge, or you might need a prep sink...Which I, actually, highly recommend anyway.

Have you checked out the Gardenweb Kitchen Forum? Or seen the Finished Kitchens Blog ( They can be addicting, but SO helpful.

  2. I just made two plain frames backed with placemats for my kitchen! I just don't have the post up, yet! I love your menu!!!

  3. I have those same ugly photo collage frames around here! Thanks for the inspiration to do something with them! I love your calendar idea... very creative :)

  4. Hi, I just found your blog and looked at post after post. You have great ideas!

I would like to invite you to my Wednedsay's Bunny Hop Party :)

  5. I love both of your dry erase boards! What a clever idea, and they came out so cute!

I posted about meal planning magnets awhile back, and your idea for meal planning is a darling alternative for folks with non-magnetic refrigerators!

  6. Just dropped by again to say thanks for joining the Bunny Hop!
