Our Bathroom {Tour}

It feels kinda weird sharing pictures of my bathroom with the world. But it's a cute little space even if it's not fancy and even if it needs painted--walls, ceiling, vanity, everything! It is what it is, and I've been able to make it cute without spending any money, and I hope you can get a few ideas for your home.

I like to pick a color for a space and go for it. And while matchy-matchy can be overdone, sometimes it can really simplify and unite a small space.

For instance, when we needed a shower curtain for our house in Ohio, we found this pretty paisley one at Walmart. We got coordinating bath and hand towels as well as the rug. It makes the bathroom look less crowded and more put-together.

Every bathroom needs a clock. This is a cheap one we've had for years, but the wood tone was bugging me. I painted the clock white and hung it from a blue ribbon. Much better!

I also made this sign to fit in a blank space. It didn't end up being centered right, but that's ok. 

To add more blue to the space, I used these little kebobs--how come I can never remember what they're called! I also have a couple jars of pretty glass the boys and I collected in our garden in Iowa (there's another one on the back of the toilet). Not shown, we use a new blue Ball jar for toothbrushes too.

I used one of my large frames and hung a wreath on it to fill a large blank space. I like that it adds texture yet the contrast with the wall isn't huge so it feels really neutral.

Spa Bath {31 Days of Moodboards}

I'm having so much fun with this series! I hope you are too. I'm spending my evenings creating beautiful spaces and design ideas at a time that I can't do it in real life. This way is a lot cheaper and much faster which makes it very gratifying!

I put this moodboard together as an idea of how to take your average home's outdated (or just plain bland) bathroom to something fun, comfortable and unique without breaking the bank. It starts with a focal wall of horizontal planks painted white. The other walls get a coat of something like this "silver sage", a blue-green-gray that reads as a neutral but SO much prettier! Then you tile the floor with small pebbles, install a rustic wood vanity with a farmhouse sink on top, hang a round bronze mirror and an old-fashioned basket pendant lamp. Next comes the fun stuff: hooks and a shelf for your bathrobe, a ladder shelf for towels or magazines, a frilly curtain, a wooden bathmat for the tub and a fuzzy white rug for the vanity. The basket pictured above is for laundry, but you could use it as inspiration to create a trash can. Then just sprinkle in a few extra touches like a woven basket (hand towels? toilet paper?), fuzzy slippers, loofahs and sponges and a convenient place to keep them while bathing.

So there you go! Blah builder basic to beautiful bliss!

Anatomy of an Organized Bathroom Vanity

This is our bathroom vanity.

It's the only vanity in our one bathroom in our house. Five people use it.

Ok, the baby only takes baths and the little boys don't spend a lot of time getting ready for the day. But it still has to be functional and maximize storage.

This is what works for us.

Of course there's a tall tower of toilet paper.

Then there are the cleaning supplies. Most are in a caddy to make them easy to grab. There is window cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, a general spray cleaner for the toilet, sink and tub, as well as clean rags and old toothbrushes for stubborn spots. Outside the caddy is some cleaning wipes for touch-up jobs (I use them almost daily), paper towels for cleaning the mirror, and if you look carefully, you'll see the toilet brush in the back.

Last is a stack of boxes with more supplies. They're sterilite brand and cost about $1. I used them for everything in my classroom when I taught. Here they house extra toothpaste, shaving supplies (my husband uses a straight razor and has honing things there), girlie things, and extra make up.

Everything else goes in this closet which is right outside the bathroom door. You know, extra shampoo, travel size things, first aide, more toilet paper... You can read more about this closet makeover here.
