Simple Solutions: Canning Jar Lids and Straws

Guys, I'm in love.

If you follow me on Instagram you've probably seen a few of my recent posts with some sort of beverage in a canning jar with a straw. Chocolate smoothie, herbal tea with lemon, iced coffee with Truvia and half 'n half... And when we moved out of our home in Iowa, I started using canning jars as our glassware. They're so much harder to break, and quite trendy too!

I've seen adorable lids on Etsy and almost bought myself some, but my husband said he could make some for me. But Target and Ball saved the day!

Sometimes after a busy day of babysitting, I take a 5- or 10-dollar bill and head to Target to unwind. Seriously, my trio is challenging enough, then add in a few more kids that belong to other people? Some days are downright difficult! But this day, the clouds parted and there were rainbows and unicorns when I saw these white jar lids and straws! They are sold in a 4-pack for about $4. I got the wide mouth version and have since gone back for the narrow mouth ones too.

These are great for helping keep liquids inside your jar and bugs and small fingers out. I plopped this big guy in the drink holder on my double jogger when we took a long walk to the park. It was perfect! No spills or splashes and I could rehydrate without stopping to take the lid off of my jar.

On this picnic last week, I filled a jar for each of my boys with iced herbal tea sweetened with honey. They loved having their own jars!

By the way, the Ball lids come with white and green striped straws. I got this set of blue ones also at Target. I like them because they're blue they have a small ring around the bottom which prevents them from getting pulled out of the the lid and getting lost or chewed on or used as digging tools at the park. Not that anyone I know would do that...

So there you go! Run out and get some!

*I wasn't perked or paid to say this, neither Ball nor Target know I exist, but maybe they should!

Simple Sign Solution {DIY Art}

Want to know a secret? You can make your own signs too.

Some of my favorite signs are the simplest, such as the sign above. I used a piece of old fencing, a layer of poly to keep the chippy white paint from chipping too much, and ...

... a Sharpie.

No fancy Cricut or Silhouette machine, no ordering vinyl quotes online. Just a steady hand and a Sharpie.

I used the same technique below on the "I am a child of God" sign.

Here's a link to that post, or you can find more about our third son's nursery in our old house by searching "nursery" in the side bar.

Of course if you're not into creating your own art, or if your hand isn't too steady, or if you don't have much time, you could order things from someone who has an Esty shop. You could try looking up the shop Beauty4AshesEtsy and contacting the owner with a custom order. Just saying.

It's day 19 of my 31 day series!

Pin-Tested

Who loves Pinterest? I do! I do!

I wanted to try something, kindof a for-the-record type post about pins I've actually tried. Some I love and continue to use, others fuel the creative fires, and still others are ... not what I was looking for. Or I failed at the execution of the directions. Whatever.

I did this artsy craft right after Josiah was born. I used shades of blue scrapbook paper and it's been on display ever since. Love it!

I got out all the supplies to do this name craft with my boys. Then I started taping. You know how hard it is to spell JONATHAN with tape? yeah, I quit and just let them paint!

I don't have different quiet time bins, but I've started giving my two older boys a certain toy for their rest time. Lately Jared has been happy playing with a bag of marbles while Jonathan is learning to follow the instruction booklet with his Legos. It keeps them happy and quiet which makes Mommy happy too!

This is Miss Mustard Seed's kitchen with a chalkboard wall. Did it. Love it. Recommend it.

If you read Friday's Instagram post, you saw that I made shorts for my boys using this technique. They hadn't outgrown the jeans but they all had holes in the knees. It worked great! I also used the same technique to shorten a pair of jeans for myself. I think I like it--at least the jeans are wearable, but I've had some issues with fraying and with the hem folding up. Hopefully a good wash or two will fix that.

This one. Oh dear. Not sure if it was me or if this is the worst idea in the history of ever. I kinda ruined my muffin tin! I mean, I soaked it for a couple days, scrubbing one little hole at a time... Baked egg is like concrete. Use lots of oil spray and don't overcook your eggs! Unless you're cooking for a crowd, just fry the eggs in a skillet. You can fit like 3 at a time! These eggs cook for 20 minutes, then you have to scrub the tin for three days. How does that save you time?

I love this soup! I've made it at least six times and each time it's perfection! You have to use the mindset that coconut oil (from the milk) is good for you and only eat this sometimes, but MAN is it good! I've tried both green and red curry paste and both are amazing. Try it!

Ok, so this girl is totally a hottie and is posed all fancy-pants, but she gives a clear reason why not to use shampoo and what to do instead. Broken down, examples, variations, etc. Well done. I'm on day 4, determined to see it through at least two weeks. The jury is still out on whether "no-poo" is right for me. Have you tried it?

Speaking of natural remedies, Wellness Mama is the motherload of DIY, natural, homemade everything. I tried her oil cleansing and while my skin was nice, my hair got oil in it. Now I use a mix of baking soda and coconut oil with a drop of peppermint essential oil to scrub my face. I love it!!! It's the perfect consistency and my face is so happy! I add a tiny dab more coconut oil to my face after my shower, especially around my eyes. It takes some getting used to adding oil to your face, but my face is clearer and than it's been in a long time. Coconut oil is also great for removing make-up.

And now to leave you in the gutter... I mean, toilet... I tried cleaning toilets this way. It helps. A lot. I still had to scrub, but some of that might have been residual from before we lived here. #shudder

What have you learned from Pinterest? Any awesome ideas? Any funny failure stories?

Adding Character to Your Rental Space

We might be renting soon. I've been giving a lot of thought on how that changes my roll as a blogger and do-it-yourselfer. The solution I've come to is that things need to be removable or reversible.

One thing before we move on. I got these images from Pinterest. Love it! Do you pin? I'll follow you back!

Follow Me on Pinterest

*Please don't pin the following images! That will just take future pinners back to my site when they click on an image to learn more about it. Instead, click on the picture which will take you to that pin on Pinterest. Then you can either re-pin it or click on the picture again to find the original post. Confusing much?*

Ok, now that that's taken care of, let's get on with example #1:

I promise, this is the only idea from my own blog. The point here is that instead of marking your kids' heights on a wall and leaving it when you move, why not measure them on this ruler and take it with you when you go? Completely removable with a little fix of a nail hole!

This living room is calm, neat, tidy, welcoming and colorful. But if you were to take away the furnishings you'd be left with a blank slate. The feel of the room, from the color to the cozy atmosphere is all added by furniture, pillows, curtains and accessories.

Source: decorpad.com via Jill on Pinterest

Here the same example is applied to a bedroom. Any color, texture, depth, storage, decoration or overall feeling of the room is added by furniture and accessories.

I borrowed the unpainted cabinets from Twenty Three Oh One. Kinda hard to find a blogger's kitchen that isn't painted! They plan to paint, I believe, but for now their kitchen looks warm and welcoming because of a few accessories in a common color. Yes, I know the walls are mint and in a rental they are usually white or beige, but it would still look nice.

Love an organized entry? Me too!! Shabby2Chic has plans to build this freestanding entry bench. As in, no holes in the wall and you just load it up and take it with you when you move on.

Here's another low-budget entry option using Ikea shoe cabinets. I love the mirror, but it doesn't have to be mounted. The lights above the mirror could be eliminated or attached to the mirror instead. Or use lamps that rest on the entry unit.

Here's a fun way to add character and shelving to a rental space! This old door has shelves mounted to it. Then the door just leans against the wall. I'm not sure if you could find a lamp that mounts to the door and plugs into the wall, but I'm sure you could figure something out.

This awesome headboard is made from stained 2x4s that are individually attached to the wall with command strips! Meaning it's completely removable! So fun!

Please don't break out the Sharpie and write the words to your favorite song on your rental wall! This is fabric held to the wall with liquid starch. You find an inexpensive fabric you like, tack it to the wall, then use liquid starch (found in the laundry section of your grocery store) and a paint roller to roll it onto the wall. When it dries you can do a second coat or touch up spots you missed. When it's time to move, peel the fabric off and wash the wall. That's it!

Ok, so this one isn't just for renters, but it's in the same vein because it's removable too. Love the texture it would add to a room for the winter!

Love stripes but can't paint? This blogger painted contact paper and stuck it to the wall after it dried! Amazing!

Don't you love Emily's home? I know you probably shouldn't attach a huge window on track, but you could lean one somewhere for an architectural element. The shelving unit in the background is another great idea. It adds an industrial feel (and more storage) without building something in.

Speaking of storage, I think this pantry is a fantastic example of how to spruce up your rental. I know I appreciate whatever my living condition is when it's organized. This is a standard pantry without fancy paint, expensive custom built-ins or anything permanent. Just pretty jars and baskets that are also functional.

Same idea here--lots of storage that is not permanent!

Here's a nice way to display craft supplies and have easy access to them too. A couple nails are allowed, right? I've seen pegboard used in other rooms too, such as nurseries, bathrooms and of course garages.

I've drooled over this command center system for years now, but the reason I've included it here is because you can have white boards, chalk boards, bulletin boards and just mount the two rods on the wall. Can I have one?

Here's a DIY version of it that is totally customizable. Super fun idea, and you only have to worry about mounting the rod, not each board.

This fun calendar is made from paint chips inside a frame. You can use a Sharpie or dry-erase marker to write on the glass, then erase it every month. One nail on the back!

I love the look of these chalkboard paint calendars. This one is made out of vinyl and won't leave permanent marks on your wall. There are many other ways to use vinyl to personalize your space, from small decals to sayings to focal walls with large pictures! Etsy is a great place to find vinyl art for sale.

Before you pock mark a wall with nail holes for this gallery display, think command strips again! Easy to change out your art, easy to remove permanently.

So there you go! 20 completely reversible ways to personalize your rental space.

Tell me, do you rent? What are your tips and tricks for making your home feel like you belong?

How To Make a Cover Collage Using PicMonkey

You know those long, narrow pictures behind your profile shot in Facebook? I find it difficult to get a picture that isn't too busy or distracting and that fits the shape of that 'cover collage'. Do you have that problem too?

Since the demise of the free online photo-editing site, Picnik, I've been using PicMonkey.  I find it easy to use for editing photos, adding my watermark and other effects and labels like my laundry soap directions you saw last week.

One function I missed, however, was being able to make a collage. But guess what?! It's up and running on PicMonkey now!

Ok, here are the step-by-step instructions on how to make a Facebook cover collage using PicMonkey. Ready?

Go to picmonkey.com (pictured above) and select 'create a collage'.
From the three gray icons on the left of the menu, select the 'layout' button in the middle.

A new menu of layout suggestions is visible now. Select 'FB Cover' about half way down the list.

Now you can choose which format you want to start your collage with. (I find that this doesn't matter much because it's super-easy to change after you start filling in the photos.)

From the three gray icons on the left, select the top one to upload your images. There will be a selection of stock images if you want to experiment, or select 'upload images' (circled in yellow).

Follow the prompts to find your images from your computer.

Begin to fill in the squares! Images can be moved from different squares and the squares can be resized, added, deleted until you're happy with the layout.

From the three gray icons on the left, select the bottom one to make changes to the background of your collage (circled in red).

I narrowed the spaces between images, rounded the corners, and selected 'transparent background' in my sample image.

Now you're ready to save your collage! Select 'save' from the menu above your collage. I was worried about the file being a png instead of a jpg, but you can't change it, so just do it!

After you save your collage, select the 'X' at the top right to go back to the main PicMonkey page.

Now you can select 'edit a photo' and upload (or drag and drop) your collage png from where you saved it on your computer.

If you would like, you can crop, resize, change the exposure and many other things from this menu. For our purposes, let's select the 'P' from the left hand menu. This is where you would add a watermark or other text.

Type your desired text into the box and select which font to use. You can change the size and color of your text with the box that pops up, as long as the text is selected.

When you're happy with your image, save it! This time the 'save' button is on the bottom left of the page. (Not circled, but it was selected and there's a handy blue pop-up down there to show you what it should look like!)

You can choose if you want your image saved to your computer or to Facebook! If you choose to save it to Facebook, you can give it a caption and it will save it to a 'PicMonkey' album.

Whichever way you choose to save your collage, you can log into your Facebook account, go to your profile page and select 'change cover' (circled in red).

Follow the prompts and enjoy your new Facebook Cover Collage!

I used a different collage than the one we just made together, but the principle is the same. I made another collage for my personal Facebook page and used a slightly different collage as my blog header--did you notice?

So there you have it! I hope you are able to use PicMonkey to edit, add watermarks or make collages in the future. And I hope all of the options I'm getting used to using stay free!

Have a great day! Oh, and come like Beauty 4 Ashes on Facebook!
