This is the barn on a hog farm not far from our place. Well, not that close either--probably 4 or 5 miles, so we don't smell them. I didn't know until a few years ago how HUGE hogs are! I also didn't know that the cylindrical structure in the background is a grain bin. So that's not at all where one would keep the hog feed. Duh. I'm thinking the hogs are fed in that other white structure in front of the barn, but I don't really know that, so I should probably stop. right. now.
Enjoy!
My friend lives on a hog farm. Her hubby was a comptroller for a huge oil company when they got married. Shortly after that he told her his dream was to own a hog farm. She about died. Their house is quite a ways from the barns, too. Thank goodness! Great picture oday- xo Diaan
ReplyDeletenow that bring back memories. i can think of that smell from my childhood. almost in our backyard ... well the farmers field behind our house. at least you can get away when you need to clean your sinuses. ha. ha!! such a great barn & farm. (:
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful barn...looks well loved.
ReplyDeletereally clean-looking, well-maintained place!
ReplyDeleteOh man, I think I can smell those hogs clear up here! Hehehehe
ReplyDeleteOh, wait, - - - that's just our PAPER MILL!
We had tons of hog farms in Indiana where we used to live, and you CAN smell them pretty far away especially in the heat of summer and if you're downwind!
Great photo of what appears to be a nice operation. I grew up on a farm in Illinois. My dad raised Chester White hogs. I have to say I don't miss the hogs, but I'm still a country girl at heart. I lived in LA for 20 years and I'm happy to be in a small mountain town now, away from the "fast lane". Thanks for visiting my blog, and more importantly, for commenting.
ReplyDeleteHi Ellie,
ReplyDeleteI don't know much about farming or the workings of a farm, but what I do know is that I love old barns, hence Barn Charm! Great find & thanks so much for joining =)
Beautiful barn.
ReplyDeleteRegards and best wishes
You are absolutely right Ellie - the white structure is a hog feeder. (Born & raised on an Iowa farm, I'm glad to lend some expertise, though it's not much!)The other feeder looks like a smaller grain bin on the far left of the hog lot. That is what we had on the farm growing up. Great post - nice to see hogs living in a barn rather than a confinement.
